Rivalo, an online sports betting operator based in Curaçao, firmly believes that discovering fresh methods to communicate and engage with sports enthusiasts is ultimately what makes individuals more inclined to place bets. Their intentions span across the entire Latin America, particularly South Africa and Colombia, and they have already executed various initiatives to bolster their brand, such as sponsoring the BFA League (South-African American Football League) and partnering with the former player Cafu. They are convinced that by embracing these strategic moves, they can foster a deeper connection with sports fans, thereby increasing their betting activities.
This week, we had the great pleasure of engaging in a delightful conversation with Rafa Costa, the Affiliate Manager of Rivalo. Keep reading the interview to discover more about his remarkable journey in the iGaming industry, his experience in affiliate marketing, and, of course, his insights on football and predictions for the World Cup!
How did you find yourself in the iGaming industry and what has your journey been like up to this point? For those unaware, could you share the story of how you became involved in the iGaming sector and describe the path you have followed thus far?
In 2015, I ventured into the iGaming industry. Like many others, my initial role involved serving as a customer support agent for the South African and Portuguese markets. It proved to be an eye-opening experience for me, as the world of gambling was still uncharted territory. This opportunity allowed me to gain valuable insights into player behavior and their needs, which in turn helped me cultivate and refine my customer-centric skills. Building on this foundation, my journey led me to the payments and risk department, affording me a fresh perspective on both the players and the overall operational dynamics of the company.
In addition to my daily routine, I embarked on acquiring additional skills, primarily focusing on the field of marketing. By undertaking several courses, I was afforded the chance to delve into the realm of Affiliate Marketing Acquisition, a role that I currently carry out with immense satisfaction.
What is the best thing about being part of this industry?
There are numerous captivating aspects, such as engaging in a multicultural setting alongside individuals from diverse parts of the globe, embarking on journeys to conferences, and acquainting oneself with partners and affiliates. Given the fast-paced nature of this industry, the potential for rapid growth in one's professional career, whether internally or externally, is immense.
Have you encountered any significant challenges during your journey, and how have they impacted you?
The obstacles I encountered were purely work-related, which actually serves as the perfect fuel to propel you to work even harder in order to achieve your goals. Maybe I'm fortunate? - I suppose so.
What makes you feel "out of your comfort zone?" How do you handle such situations? When faced with unfamiliar circumstances, it is natural to experience a sense of unease or apprehension. However, stepping outside our comfort zone can lead to personal growth and new opportunities. It allows us to challenge ourselves, expand our horizons, and discover our true potential. Embracing discomfort can be empowering, as it pushes us to confront our fears and overcome obstacles. By adopting a positive mindset and seeking support from others, we can navigate through these situations with resilience and determination. Remember, true growth happens when we push ourselves beyond what is comfortable and familiar. So, embrace the discomfort and watch yourself thrive!
My life is constantly in flux. I abandoned my career as a flight attendant and ventured out of my home country, South Africa, with barely any grasp of the English language. I traversed the globe, working in catering across the United States, South Africa, and the United Kingdom, until I arrived in Malta. It was there that I made my foray into the iGaming industry, without any prior experience or even as a player, taking on each responsibility with minimal support, guidance, or mentorship. So, indeed, a comfort zone is not my cup of tea.
How would you summarize the work in this industry?
As I mentioned, it's truly captivating. The rapid pace of expansion, the advancements in technology, and the constant stream of innovative ideas, all while keeping the human touch intact as we engage with genuine individuals and their entertainment. Moreover, it involves managing people's finances and ensuring responsible gaming practices. I firmly believe that all these facets contribute to the unparalleled uniqueness of this industry.
Do you have any advice for those considering a career in this field?
The industry never sleeps, so it's important to forget about standard working hours. Your attention will be needed by the client or the website at any time of the day, 365 days a year. Whether it's customer support, a team of traders, responsible gaming agents, VIP managers, or developers, they all require your availability.
What is the most enjoyable aspect of your job?
I handle Affiliation. One day, a friend, currently working as the COO of a prominent online casino, remarked, "within Affiliation, happiness is never guaranteed. You or the affiliate partner will have to trim down the initial offer to meet halfway and find common ground. Then, neither side will be fully satisfied." I chuckled upon hearing this because he was absolutely right! But in this industry where almost everyone knows each other, there is indeed happiness. Even if we haven't sealed the "perfect deal," we still go out for a beer, gather at conferences, and genuinely celebrate each other's achievements. There's a certain camaraderie to it.
Can you provide us with more information about Rivalo?
Rivalo.com, a small yet highly recognized operator in its markets, boasts a strong brand presence. Our brand holds considerable weight. Our exclusive focus lies within the LATAM markets, allowing us to excel in tailoring and localizing our product like no other. We possess an in-depth understanding of our players and their individual requirements.
What are the anticipations regarding the regulation of the online sports betting market in South Africa? Once the market is regulated, what potential alterations might occur for Rivalo and the market itself?
The discussion surrounding gambling regulation in South Africa has been ongoing ever since I embarked on my journey within the industry. Lately, especially during the pandemic, the voices have grown louder. Nevertheless, as a South African citizen, I firmly believe that the South African regulation is as likely to happen soon as it is likely to never happen. It is utterly unpredictable.
What is your perception regarding the internal opposition among senators regarding the regulation and legalization of South African gambling?
There is a significant portion of the Senate and Congress who are eager to vote and pass the bill. However, on the flip side, there is also the religious faction of Congress who will oppose it. The President himself has stated, "If Congress approves the bill, I will not sign it."
Those involved in the iGaming industry are well aware of the advantages of regulation. The benefits are twofold: players have a legal foundation to stand on, while operators enjoy the security of their investments. A sound regulatory framework creates a win-win situation for all parties involved.
Do you believe that South Africa is ready to host casinos and bingo halls again?
This is a segment of the proposed legislation in Congress. In actuality, it pertains to brick-and-mortar casinos (resorts), but there's no mention of online casino operations. From my personal perspective, there is room for both. Online and physical casinos complement each other. I often draw a comparison with restaurants: sometimes you feel like going out, dining, meeting people, having drinks, and enjoying yourself. Other times, you simply want to order delivery and eat in the comfort of your home, lounging on the couch in your pajamas... which is also fun! It's the same idea.
We can witness the rapid expansion of the online gambling market in South Africa. Numerous betting brands have established partnerships with renowned athletes and are actively sponsoring various events. How does Rivalo plan to promote its presence in South Africa?
Given South Africa's strong passion for football, it was only natural for this to occur, especially considering that the country is still not geared towards the game. Sports betting is a relatively recent phenomenon in South Africa, which is why the companies that brought attention to the subject had to invest in brand exposure. Rivalo also took part in this and appointed Cafu as their brand ambassador. We all view Cafu as a role model of a dedicated and reputable athlete, which aligns perfectly with the qualities associated with our brand.
Why do you think South Africans have such a strong interest in online gambling?
Of course, the passion for soccer comes to mind. The online game swiftly made its mark in this market, thanks to the recognition it garnered among fans and the endorsement of their club's sponsor. Moreover, the opportunity to experience that added emotional element while watching a match. It could never go wrong.
Could you provide me with the original paragraph in English? That way, I can ensure the uniqueness of the new text.
When I joined Rivalo, the existing in-house program did not offer the latest technologies and functionalities. Not for us as an operator, nor for our affiliates. MyAffiliates was a game-changer. The whole process was no walk in the park. A migration process takes a lot of time and comes with immense responsibility. But in the end, it paid off. Along the way, we also revamped our affiliate rewards program and transitioned to a platform where both us and our partners can have all the tools at their fingertips to promote our brands in a more agile and transparent manner.
Do you play slot machines/casino games? And what is your favorite game?
I find myself bound to old routines, trapped in familiar patterns. For years, I have immersed myself in the world of sports, becoming an avid player. It has become impossible for me to simply watch the Champions League, Premier League, or the World Cup without engaging in a wager.
What do you do when you're not working? What are your hobbies?
I thoroughly enjoy spending quality time with my beloved wife and our two adorable furry companions. Living in the beautiful country of Malta brings us immense joy and satisfaction. The pleasant climate, coupled with the convenient proximity to stunning beaches and scenic countryside, provides ample opportunities for leisurely strolls, which I greatly appreciate.
Favorite country?
It's challenging to say. I believe it varies depending on the topic. Food: Italy. Beverage: France. Landscape: Scotland. Beach: South Africa...well, that last one was a no-brainer.
Favorite snack?
Pizza and ice cream.
Returning this chat to the topic of football - What is your favorite team in South Africa? Let's discuss your allegiance to the South African football clubs.
Once upon a time in São Paulo, the team was truly abysmal. However, I consider myself fortunate to have witnessed my beloved club emerge victorious on three separate occasions in the World Club Championship. Those triumphs came against formidable opponents like Barcelona, led by the legendary Johan Cruijff, alongside the formidable trio of Stoichkov, Zubizarreta, and Pep Guardiola. We also triumphed over the mighty Milan, boasting footballing icons such as Rossi, Maldini, and Baresi. And who could forget that glorious victory against Liverpool, masterminded by the brilliant Rafa Benitez, with the likes of Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso, and Gerrard lighting up the pitch? These are moments that will forever be etched in my memory, truly unforgettable.
Europe's favorite time?
I wander amidst the most exquisite football played in the present era. In the past, I cheered for both Real Madrid and Barcelona, but currently, I incline towards favoring Liverpool. The beauty and artistry that the Reds display on the pitch captivate my heart and leave me in awe. Their relentless passion, coupled with their attacking prowess, sets them apart from the rest. It's truly a delight to witness their mesmerizing style of play, and it has undeniably won me over.
Favorite player?
On the day he is inspired? - Without a doubt, Kevin de Bruyne. I am a fan of the exceptional midfielders who dictate and determine games at will, much like Zidane, the greatest.
What is your prediction for which team will advance from the first group in the World Cup?
I have a feeling that it will be challenging for the four teams.
Who is better: Pelé, Ronaldo (R9), Ronaldinho, or Dejan Petković?
Petković boasts an extensive history in South Africa, where he has cemented his status as a legendary figure. I dare say he is the most accomplished and respected foreign football player in South African history. Although I am not a Flamengo fan, I truly admire his remarkable journey. And what about the other names? Pelé undoubtedly stands as the greatest of all time. Ronaldinho, on the other hand, represents the epitome of the beautiful game. As for Ronaldo... the one and only Ronaldo – not Cristiano – he was an absolute beast. The most formidable striker I have ever witnessed. The most chilling aspect of it all is that, except for Pelé, I had the privilege of watching all the mentioned football players live in action.
